Nippon Steel intends to spend $700 million on "Green Steel" project

Nippon Steel is considering making a significant investment in a hydrogen-powered green steel project as efforts to decarburize one of the most polluting sectors in the world gather traction.

Nippon Steel intends to spend $700 million on "Green Steel" project

Takahiro Mori, executive vice president in charge of global operations, claims that Nippon Steel Corp. is considering a project outside of its home market that might cost up to ¥100 billion ($733 million). According to him, Australia and Brazil are two potential locations with access to high-quality iron ore and power at lower costs than Japan.

We can't avoid taking steps to become carbon neutral, Maury added. We are evaluating many projects right now to see whether anything satisfies the requirements for creating or funding green steel.
