Jindal Stainless plans to produce stainless steel in Indonesia

Jindal Stainless, a leading stainless steel manufacturer based in India, has unveiled an ambitious investment plan amounting to 54 billion rupees, equivalent to around $650 million, aimed at expanding its production capabilities.

Jindal Stainless plans to produce stainless steel in Indonesia

One notable aspect of this initiative is Jindal Stainless's potential pioneering move to establish metallurgical facilities in Indonesia. In a significant move in March 2023, the company acquired a 49% stake in New Yaking, an Indonesian firm, for $157 million. New Yaking is currently in the process of constructing a nickel pig iron (NPI) plant on Halmahera Island, slated to commence operations in the first half of 2025. With a projected capacity of 200,000 metric tons, this facility will produce material containing an average of 14% nickel.

Moreover, plans are in place to construct a stainless steel melting plant with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons on the same site. Presently, Jindal Stainless has production capacities of 3.0 million tons per year.

The products manufactured at the Indonesian facility will be shipped to India for further processing. In this regard, Jindal Stainless will invest 19 billion rupees (228 million US dollars) to expand its rolling capacities at its Jaipur plant in Odisha.

In addition Jindal Stainless aims to acquire a majority stake of 54% in Chromeni Steels Private Limited (CSPL) in Gujarat, with an investment of 13.4 billion rupees(160.8 million US dollars). CSPL is known for its production of up to 600,000 tons of stainless cold-rolled coils annually.
