Japanese Trade Minister Hagiuda Koichi met with US Trade Representative Katherine Tai in Tokyo on Wednesday.
They agreed to deal with tariffs imposed by the Trump administration in 2018. This brought additional taxes on steel of 25 percent and aluminum of 10 percent from Japan and many other countries. The White House said the imported metals were hurting domestic industries at the time.
The two countries also agreed to create a new framework for coordinating actions against governments that hinder fair competition through measures such as excessive subsidies to companies.
