According to the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) global stainless steel production in the first quarter of 2022 was 14.45 million tons. The revision of last year's figures affected China. Earlier, ISSF estimated the smelting volume at just over 8.2 million tons in the first quarter, then statistics give 8,708 million tons according to the updated data. In January-March 2022 Chinese companies produced 8,011 million tons of stainless steel.
While European countries produced 1.86 million tons which is 2.6% less than the same period of the previous year, in the United States it decreased by 8.8% to 569 thousand tons.
At the same time growth was recorded in Asia. Japan, India and Taiwan together produced 1.956 million tons of stainless steel in the first quarter 4.0% more than January-March 2021 while Indonesia and Korea (plus Brazil, Russia and South Africa) increased their output by 8.0%.
