First sheet produced at Angang Guangzhou CGL No. 2 line

SMS group announced that the first sheet has been successfully produced at the No. 2 continuous hot-dip galvanizing line (CGL No. 2) installed at Angang Guangzhou Automotive Steel Co., Ltd. in China.

Production was completed 40 days ahead of the official schedule, marking a significant early commissioning achievement.

According to the company, this milestone further strengthens the long-standing partnership between SMS group and Angang and also marks the commissioning of the second continuous galvanizing line at the Guangzhou site.

The new line was designed to produce 400,000 tons per year of high-surface-quality automotive steels. The facility is particularly focused on automotive-grade steels requiring superior exposed-surface quality and is intended to meet the industry’s stringent quality standards.

SMS group supplied the mechanical systems, furnace and process equipment, as well as the electrical and automation systems for the project from a single source. The company also provided technical support during the installation and commissioning phases.

The line was designed to ensure consistent surface quality from strip entry through coil winding. In the cleaning section, a combination of mechanical, hydrodynamic, and chemical processes removes surface contaminants and prepares the material for heat treatment.

At the core of the technology is the Drever full radiant tube annealing furnace, which maintains surface integrity and tight tolerances through atmosphere control independent of combustion and ambient conditions. Following annealing and galvanizing, the Duma-Bandzink air knife system ensures coating uniformity and optimizes surface quality.

At the final stage of the line, the inline skin-pass mill applies controlled surface pressure to improve sheet formability and support the forming processes required by the automotive industry.

In addition, the facility operates with the smart manufacturing and autonomous operation system developed under SMS group’s X-Pact® Lights-Out concept. Through the X-Pact® Integrated Operating Center (IOC), the entire line can be centrally monitored and controlled.

The X-Pact® Vision HMI technology works in conjunction with live camera feeds, providing operators with real-time process monitoring capabilities and aiming to enhance production efficiency.
