Domestic scrap shipping costs in Germany and the Benelux have increased further in the past month due to truck driver shortages and rising fuel prices.
They stated that scrap suppliers' logistics costs for truck-delivered scrap have increased by about 5% in 2021, while they have increased by 5-10% in the last 4-6 weeks.
Despite the higher shipping costs of trucks, changing shipping methods is not an option for many scrap suppliers. One alternative is to use trains to transport scrap, but reserving train carriages is not easy.
Another option is to receive or ship parcels by river barge, but this method is not applicable to suppliers far from the port.
