Germany, which ranked 8th in crude steel production in 2021 with 40.1 million tons, experienced a decline in 2022 and 2023. Germany's crude steel production in 2022 was recorded as 36.9 million tons and in 2023 as 35.4 million tons with a 3.9% decrease compared to the previous year. Despite this decline, from 2022 onwards, Germany rose to the 7th place in the world crude steel production ranking, being one step ahead of Türkiye.
In recent years, Germany's industrial and economic performance has declined, a trend expected to continue into 2024. It was put forward that high energy prices, weak demand, as well as inflation, had an impact on the decline in German crude steel production. It is important to note that production has been at the lowest levels since the financial market crisis in 2009. While politicians share the blame, it is argued that a deeper issue lies in intellectual complacency among German industrial leaders.
On the other side, Türkiye has fallen one place behind Germany due to the higher levels of decrease in production. Türkiye's crude steel production reflected the decline, at 35.1 million tons in 2022 and 33.7 million tons in 2023, down 3.9%.
