Britain announces 'heaviest package of sanctions' against Russia

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a new package of additional sanctions targeting Russian banks, companies, institutions and individuals following Russia's military intervention in Ukraine.

Britain announces 'heaviest package of sanctions' against Russia

In his speech in the parliament, where he announced the new sanctions against Russia, Johnson described these sanctions as "the largest and heaviest sanctions package Russia has ever seen".

Stating that Russian President Vladimir Putin "will never be able to clean the blood of Ukraine from his hands", Johnson said that Putin, whom he described as a bloody aggressor, will be "condemned" in the eyes of the world and history.

Johnson reported that the UK's sanctions will target all major Russian banks, 5 Russian oligarchs and more than 100 companies and individuals.

Underlining that his country will freeze the assets of all major Russian banks next week, Johnson noted that all assets of VTB Bank will be frozen "immediately".

Johnson also noted that the Russian airline company Aeroflot will cease operations.

Britain to impose sanctions on Belarus

Stating that the new sanctions will prevent large Russian companies and the state from obtaining financing or borrowing money in the UK markets, Johnson underlined that they will impose similar economic sanctions on Belarus due to its role in the military intervention against Ukraine.

Noting that the new sanctions would mean "the Russian oligarchs in London have nowhere to hide", Johnson said that the amount of money Russian citizens can deposit into their bank accounts in the UK will also be limited.

"We will continue the relentless task of squeezing Russia in the global economy day by day and week by week," Boris Johnson said. made its assessment.
