Aperam invests to reduce energy consumption

French stainless steel producer Aperam is investing in upgrading its facilities in order to reduce energy consumption by 30% and improve the balance of energy resources to mitigate the impact of fluctuations in energy prices.

The company faced a significant impact from energy prices, especially during peak values in the summer of 2022. Aperam buys energy through futures hedging, spot contracts and fixed price contracts.

The company applies an energy premium of €866/ton to its March contracts. With a production capacity of 2.5 million tons in six factories in Brazil, Belgium and France, Aperam's 2022 sales amounted to 8.16 million Euros. In 2022, the company's EBITDA was €712 million in the first half and €364 million in the second half, facing the impact of energy prices, declining customer stocks and record imports from Asia.

In February 2023, the average monthly electricity price in most European markets exceeded 130 MWh, leading to an overall decline in wind power generation and an increase in the cost of the carbon contract.
