Algoma Steel, operating in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, has successfully completed its modernization project at the plate production facility with a $135 million investment.
The completion of the project was announced with a ceremony attended by Algoma Steel CEO Michael Garcia and Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Matthew Shoemaker.
Initiated in 2019, this project significantly increased the company's annual plate production capacity from 450,000 tons to 650,000 tons. The steel plate production facility is a large-scale plant where metals like steel are processed into wide and flat plates.
The modernization process took place in two phases; the first phase focused on quality improvements and was completed in 2022. The second phase was completed earlier this year, achieving the goal of increasing production efficiency. Despite some delays and cost increases due to technical challenges, the project significantly improved the operational efficiency of the facility and expanded its product range.
