Mauritania's mining industry began to rise in 2009, with iron, uranium, diamonds, nickel, lithium, ornamental stones, beryl, copper and gold mines generally found in Mauritania. Compared to 2006, its share in GDP increased from 12.2% to 26.4% in 2012. In addition, it realized 66% of exports in 2012.

While Mauritania has approximately 1 billion tons of iron ore reserves, its annual production is known as 12 million tons. All activities related to iron are carried out by the National Association of the Mining Industry (Societe nationale des industries minieres- SNIM) and its partners in the Guelb El Aouj region. From 2013 SNIM decided to implement a new modernization and development program. Accordingly, annual production is planned to increase to 4 million tons.

DeBeers, Rex Mining, Rio Tinto and Aston are cited as the big and famous mining companies of Mauritania.

According to the data of the International Trade Center (ITC), the export and import capacity of the country has decreased in the last 3 years and is given below.

Export rates were recorded as 2,462,517 in 2013, 2,139,811 in 2014 and 2,113,313 million dollars in 2015. Import figures decreased by 3,978,492 in 2013, 3,641,758 in 2014 and 2,637,116 million in 2015. The main products exported are Iron ore and concentrates in 2013, 1,269,225, in 2014 854,241 and in 2015, 605,469 million dollars, while the remaining products, Copper ores and concentrates, Molluscs (live, fresh, chilled, frozen, dried, salted etc.), Fish (frozen), Gold (including platinum-plated gold raw or semi-processed, in powder form).

Four product groups of Mauritania accounted for 85% of total exports, with 28.7% iron ore exports, 15.6% copper ore exports, 28.7% fisheries exports and 12% gold exports. The most important countries in Mauritania's export are, respectively, China, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Japan and Turkey. While China's share in exports is 35.3%, Turkey's share in Mauritania's exports is below 1%, ranking 17th. Turkey's exports have been significantly improved since 2006. Compared to 2006, the export rate from Turkey to Mauritania increased from 8.9 million dollars to 111 million dollars in 2012, while it decreased by 97 million dollars to 73.2 million dollars from 2015 til 2016.

On the other hand, our imports from Mauritania are at low levels. while it was over 7 million dollars in 2007 and 2008, it was 12.8 million dollars in 2015 and 15.1 million dollars in 2016. In 2016, the foreign trade volume was 88 million dollars, and the foreign trade balance was 58 million dollars, which was beneficial for Turkey.
