Global coal consumption has increased

According to the results of January-June 2023, global coal consumption increased by 1.5%, to 4.7 billion tons. The growth is associated with an increase in electricity production and industrial use of coal.

The largest demand for coal in the world market was recorded in the largest solid fuel consuming countries - China and India. It is estimated that the share of these states in global coal consumption in 2023 will approach 70%.

At the same time, according to the results of the current year, coal consumption will remain at the level of 2022 and amount to 8.3 billion tons. However, it is specified that the final result will depend on the state of the economies of large consumer countries. At the same time, analysts are confident that in 2023 coal production will increase in China, India and Indonesia. In Russia, the production of solid fuel is expected to decrease by 2.9%, to 429 million tons. In January-May 2023, Russian coal mining enterprises increased production by 2% year-on-year to 162 million tons.
