According to data from the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Germany’s ferrous scrap exports totaled around 7.7 million tons in 2022, falling by 14% compared to the previous year. This figure hit the lowest since the economic crisis and the most severe downturn in 2009.
In spite of the decrease in the export volume, the value of these exports was up by 8.9% year on year to EUR 4.9 billion in 2022.
During the period, Germany’s scrap exports to the Netherlands accounted for the largest proportion, but the volume dropped by 17.8% year on year to 1.6 million tons. Italy ranked second with nearly 1.5 million tons, with a year-on-year decrease of 13%.
In terms of imports, Germany imported around 4.3 million tons of scrap in 2022, falling by 12% from the preceding year. The Netherlands was the main supplier during the period, with a total supply of approximately 932,000 tons, sliding by 3.1% from the year-ago volume.
