The European Commission has started a second anti-dumping investigation about certain stainless steel imports from China, including hot-dip galvanized steel coils.
In November 2022, the European steel association Eurofer requested such an investigation.
Existing European taxes on such products were introduced in 2017. Their values range from 17.2% to 27.9%, depending on the manufacturer. In the first 11 months of 2022, EU countries imported 666.7 thousand tons of hot-dip galvanized steel from China, which is 23% more than in the same period of 2021 (542 thousand tons). However, these numbers were recorded as much lower than in 2017, when it reached almost 1.9 million tons.
In addition to taxes, hot-dip galvanized steel from China is subject to tariff and quota restrictions that the EU introduced in 2019. Restrictions apply to 26 steel product categories. In case the quota of products is reached, their supply to the EU is subject to an additional 25% customs duty. Quotas are reset every three months. The tariff quota system will officially come to an end in June 2024.
