Deep-sea scrap market remains under buyer pressure

Turkish steelmakers continue to take a cautious approach to scrap purchasing amid weak finished steel demand and narrowing profit margins.

Deep-sea scrap market remains under buyer pressure

A US-origin cargo sold to the Marmara region was concluded at $375/t CFR for HMS 80:20, while Shredded and P&S were booked at $395/t CFR. Meanwhile, lower price levels continued to emerge for European-origin cargoes.

An HMS 80:20 shipment from Belgium to Iskenderun was concluded at $368/t CFR, while a Baltic-origin cargo to the Mediterranean was booked at $365/t CFR for HMS 80:20.

Meanwhile, Romanian-origin short-sea HMS offers declined to as low as $350/t CFR, adding further downward pressure to the deep-sea scrap market.

More competitive prices from nearby suppliers continue to limit the competitiveness of European deep-sea cargoes, prompting Turkish buyers to remain cautious in booking new cargoes.Supported by weak finished steel demand and squeezed profit margins, Turkish steelmakers continue to adopt a cautious approach to scrap procurement.
