USD 2.5 billion iron and steel project planned in Libya

An industrial complex being developed in Benghazi, eastern Libya, to produce iron with lower carbon emissions is expected to attract approximately USD 2.5 billion in investment. Commercial production is targeted to begin in early 2028

USD 2.5 billion iron and steel project planned in Libya

The facility, planned for construction at Benghazi Port on the Mediterranean coast, is expected to produce direct reduced iron (DRI), an important input for steel production. DRI can be produced with lower carbon emissions than conventional steelmaking and is particularly prominent in natural gas based production routes.

The project was announced in 2024, with the facility targeting annual DRI production of approximately 8.1 million mt.

Natural gas supply for the first phase of the project has reportedly been secured. With commercial production scheduled to begin in early 2028, the facility is expected to become one of the major industrial investments in eastern Libya.

Companies based in Türkiye are also reported to have made significant investments in the construction and energy sectors in eastern Libya.
