Court rules against Trump's import tariffs

The US Court of International Trade ruled that President Donald Trump exceeded his legal authority on import tariffs and ordered a halt to their implementation.

Court rules against Trump's import tariffs

The court announced its decision in a lawsuit filed against the Trump administration's tariffs imposed on certain countries on a “reciprocity basis”.

The Court held that the authority granted to the President under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not extend to the imposition of such tariffs. Noting that the Constitution gives only Congress the power to regulate trade and impose taxes, the ruling stated that the challenged taxes would be canceled and the imposition of these taxes would be permanently prohibited.

Trump's appeal against the decision

US President Donald Trump has announced that he is appealing the court's decision.

After taking office for the second time, Trump signed a decree on April 2 to impose new tariffs on US trading partners. Within the scope of this step, which he described as “Independence Day”, Trump announced that the basic tax rate would be 10%, and that country-specific rates would be determined by taking into account the tariffs and non-tariff barriers applied by countries.

The court's decision brought a new legal limit debate on the Trump administration's foreign trade policies.
