China and the US make progress at trade talks in London

Negotiations in London to resolve the escalating trade tensions between China and the US, which escalated with mutual tariff hikes, have reportedly made progress.

China and the US make progress at trade talks in London

In a statement on the talks, China's International Trade Representative Li Chinggang noted that the sides had held “rational, professional, sincere and deep” contacts over the past two days, and that there had been significant progress on a solution.

Li said the talks agreed in principle on a framework for implementing the agreement reached at meetings in Geneva in May, which came up in a phone call between the leaders of the two countries on June 5. “The progress in London will contribute to the consolidation of trust between China and the US and the healthy development of economic and trade relations,” Li stated, adding that concrete details will be made public after the leaders' approval.

“Framework” statement from the US

US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick also issued a press release at the end of the negotiations, saying that a framework for implementing the agreement reached in Geneva had been reached. “The two largest economies in the world shook hands on this framework. We will implement this step with the approval of President Trump; the Chinese side will get the approval of President Xi,” he stated.

The talks were held on June 9-10 in the British capital London. The Chinese delegation consisted of Vice Premier for Economic Affairs Hi Lifıng, Minister of Commerce Vang Vintao and International Trade Representative Li Chinggang, while the US was represented by Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
