Tuğberk İmamoğlu departed from İSDEMİR Port
The two commercial vessels, ALSU and Tuğberk İmamoğlu, collided during the night approximately 18 nautical miles south of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara. Contact was lost with the 10 crew members aboard Tuğberk İmamoğlu following the collision. Teams from the General Directorate of Coastal Safety and the Coast Guard Command are continuing search and rescue operations in the area.
Tuğberk İmamoğlu, which was carrying 4,199 mt of steel coils and rebar, had departed from İSDEMİR Port and was sailing toward Karadeniz Ereğli. The ALSU tanker, which was sailing from Kocaeli to Aliağa and has a cargo capacity of 2,999 mt of motor oil, was reportedly empty at the time of the accident. Initial inspections following the collision found no visible damage to the ALSU tanker.
Ünal Baylan, General Director of Maritime Affairs, stated that existing systems were able to confirm with 99% certainty that the ship had sunk.
Deep sea operation planned for wreckage
The sea depth in the area where Tuğberk İmamoğlu is believed to have sunk is estimated to be between approximately 800 and 1,100 meters.
Due to the depth, research and coordination efforts are continuing to determine and secure suitable technical capabilities for locating the vessel and wreckage area, conducting surveys and inspections of the seabed, and obtaining evidence.
