Blast furnace stopped at ArcelorMittal in Spain

On September 29, ArcelorMittal Corporation began the process of shutting down blast furnace A at the ArcelorMittal Asturias (Gijon) steel plant in Spain. ArcelorMittal announced its decision to temporarily disable these capacities at the beginning of September.

ArcelorMittal Asturias operated with two blast furnaces with a total capacity of approximately 4.5 million tons per year. Stopping one of them was foreseen as one of the consequences that will lead to a decrease in steel production. Wire rod, thick steel, sheets and rails were produced in the company.

According to the company, the blast furnace was shut down for at least three months due to adverse market conditions. Accordingly, the timing of the return to service will depend on the demand and prices for steel products in the European market.

ArcelorMittal decommissioned a blast furnace in France in mid-September and plans to close another furnace in Poland in the first ten days of October. In addition, the company had previously announced its decision to close another blast furnace at the ArcelorMittal Bremen steel plant in Germany. So far, there has been no new development on this issue.
