Australian mining company BHP Group has decided to develop its electric smelting furnace pilot plant to decrease CO2 emissions. The company signed an agreement with engineering and project management firm Hatch. The aim of the agreement is to jointly develop an electric smelting furnace pilot plant in Australia.
With this project, the company aims to reduce carbon dioxide intensity by using iron ore from the Pilbara mines, reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050, and apply renewable electricity and hydrogen instead of coking coal in steel production.
