BHP Group has decided to start green steel production. The company will build a pilot plant in Australia for steel production. The raw materials will come from deposits in the Pilbara iron ore region in Western Australia. The capacity of the pilot plant has not yet been determined.
The plant will be built using DRI-EAF technology, which allows the company to process medium iron ore. Technological solutions for the project will be presented by Hatch engineers.
The company wants to reduce dependence on coking coal and carbon dioxide emissions. The pilot plant will mainly use hydrogen and other forms of clean electricity.
