The new transport route through the Hanseatic city will connect Hamburg's eastern and western districts to the city center. Hamburger Hochbahn AG and its subsidiary HOCHBAHN U5 Projekt GmbH aim to set a new standard for environmental responsibility in the construction of the U5 line.
For the first time, not only the carbon emissions generated on site during the construction process, but also the entire supply chain of building materials is being systematically evaluated. In this context, XCarb® branded reinforcing steel, which stands out with its environmentally friendly production processes, plays an important role.
Up to 88% CO2 Savings
The 1,100 tons of XCarb® reinforcing steel supplied by ArcelorMittal was produced in an electric arc furnace from recycled scrap using 100% renewable energy. Compared to the traditional blast furnace method, steel production with this method emits only 300 kilograms of CO2 per ton instead of around 2,570 kilograms. This results in a reduction in carbon emissions of more than 88%.
The environmental impacts of steel products are transparently recorded by documenting them with the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
“U5 will set an example for public projects”
Klaus Uphoff, Technical Director of HOCHBAHN U5 Projekt GmbH, stated: "For U5, we aim to reduce CO2 emissions by 70% during the construction process. In this context, we carefully examine the supply chain of our building materials. ArcelorMittal is one of the suppliers contributing to this goal by using recycled scrap and green electricity. This project can be a model for future public construction projects."
“Price should not be the only criterion in public purchases”
Joachim Scheibe, General Manager of ArcelorMittal Commercial Long Germany, stated that sustainability should be taken more into account in public tenders and stated the following:
"In public purchases, not only price but also environmental impacts should be taken into account. It is pleasing to see sustainability integrated into the procurement process in the U5 project. We believe this approach will pave the way for the wider use of CO2-reduced steel in both the public and private sectors."
Once completed, the U5 metro line is expected to not only strengthen Hamburg's public transportation infrastructure, but also stand out as an exemplary project in Europe with its low-carbon construction approach.
