American Cliffs builds a line for the production of electrical steel

US mining and steel group Cleveland-Cliffs has announced the commissioning of a new line for the production of electrical steel at its Zanesville, Ohio plant.

American Cliffs builds a line for the production of electrical steel

It was announced that the capacity of the line is more than 63 thousand tonnes per year. As Lorenzo Goncalves, CEO of Cleveland-Cliffs, noted, the engine of an average electric car contains about 70 kg of this material. At the same time, in recent years, the United States has become heavily dependent on electrical steel imports.

According to Gonçalves, the company is currently implementing another project related to energy conversion. Blast Furnace No. 7 at the Port of Indiana is planning to conduct hydrogen injection experiments that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The company has previously carried out similar work at its other metallurgical plant, Middletown Works.

Hydrogen currently costs about 10 times the price of natural gas in the USA. Cleveland-Cliffs is therefore supporting a Midwest hydrogen centre project in the hope that it will reduce the cost of this resource.
