Yemen's Houthis seize Israeli cargo ship in the Red Sea

Israel announced that the Houthis seized a cargo ship sailing from Turkiye in the Red Sea. The statement said that the Houthis in Yemen seized a British-owned and Japanese-operated cargo ship in the southern Red Sea.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the ship was hijacked off the coast of Yemen, calling it a "very serious international incident".

It said there were citizens of different countries on board but no Israelis.

A Houthi spokesperson said they intended to sink all ships flying the Israeli flag or operated by Israeli companies.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the "global implications" of the incident and stressed the seriousness of the situation. The Houthis have previously attacked Israeli-flagged ships, raising tensions in the region, where fighting is already escalating.

The Israeli military said, "The hijacking of a cargo ship by the Houthis near Yemen in the southern Red Sea is a grave incident with global consequences. The ship, staffed by civilians of various nationalities, except Israelis, was en route from Turkiye to India. This is not an Israeli ship."
