EU car sales fell by 3.9 percent in January

New car sales in the European Union (EU) market fell by 3.9 percent year-on-year in January to 799,625.

According to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), 38.6% of new cars sold in EU countries were hybrid, 22% gasoline, 19.3% electric, 9.8% plug-in hybrid, 8.1% diesel, and 2.2% other fuel types.

Electric car sales increased by 24.2% year-on-year in January, reaching 154,230 units. Fully electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid models accounted for 67.7% of total sales.

New car sales varied by country. Sales decreased by 6.6% in Germany and France in January, while they increased by 1.1% in Spain and 6.2% in Italy.

Among automotive manufacturers, the Volkswagen Group had the highest sales performance in the EU in January with 219,708 vehicles. Stellantis Group, which owns the Peugeot, Fiat, Citroen, and Opel brands, came in second with 145,750 sales. Renault Group was third with 75,243 new cars.
