The World Steel Association announced crude steel production figures for March 2026. Accordingly, crude steel production in 69 countries decreased by 4.2% year-on-year in March 2026, reaching 159.9 million tons (Mt).
Africa’s crude steel production increased by 11.6% compared to the same month last year, reaching 2.2 million tons. In the Asia and Oceania region, production declined by 3.9% to 119.3 million tons. The EU (27) recorded production of 11.4 million tons, down by 4.6%, while production in other European regions increased by 4.9% to 3.8 million tons.
Crude steel production in the Middle East decreased by 33.5% to 3.5 million tons, while production in North America increased by 3.5% to 9.5 million tons. In Russia, other CIS countries, and Ukraine, production fell by 7.9% to 6.6 million tons. South America produced 3.6 million tons of crude steel, down by 0.5%.
Decline continues in China, while growth persists in India and the U.S.
On a country basis, China’s crude steel production in March 2026 decreased by 6.3% year-on-year to 87.0 million tons. In the same period, India’s production increased by 9.4% to 15.3 million tons, while U.S. production rose by 5.2% to 7.2 million tons.
In March, Japan’s crude steel production declined by 4.1% to 6.9 million tons, while South Korea’s production increased by 1.5% to 5.4 million tons. Russia’s production is estimated to have decreased by 11.4% to 5.4 million tons.
During the same period, Türkiye’s production increased by 6.4% to 3.3 million tons, while Germany’s production rose by 7.5% to 3.3 million tons. Brazil’s production decreased by 2.5% to 2.8 million tons, while Vietnam’s production is estimated to have increased by 5.7% to 2.2 million tons.
