World crude steel production decreased by 4.4% y-o-y to 151.4 million tons (Mt) in January 2025.

World crude steel production decreased by 4.4% in January

The World Steel Association (WorldSteel) announced crude steel production figures for January 2025. Accordingly, world crude steel production of 69 countries amounted to 151.4 million tons (Mt) in January 2025, down by 4.4% compared to the same month of the previous year.

Crude steel production by region

In January, Africa's crude steel production fell by 3.5% y-o-y to 1.9 million tons. In the Asia and Oceania region, production fell by 4.5% to 112.3 million tons. The EU (27) produced 10.3 million tons of steel, down 3.3%, while the rest of Europe produced 3.5 million tons, down 6.8%. Production in the Middle East fell 15.3% to 4.2 million tons. In North America, production fell by 0.5% to 9 million tons. Production in Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries and Ukraine increased by 1.4% to 7 million tons. South America produced 3.2 million tons of crude steel, down 9.8%.

China's crude steel production fell by 5.6% y-o-y to 81.9 million tons in February. In the same period, India's crude steel production rose by 6.8% to 13.6 million tons, while Japan produced 6.8 million tons, down 6.6%. The US produced 6.6 million tons of steel, up 1.2%, while Russia produced 6 million tons, down 0.6%. South Korea's output fell by 8.8% to 5.2 million tons. Germany produced 2.8 million tons of crude steel, down 8.8%, Türkiye 3.2 million tons, down 1.4%, and Brazil 2.6 million tons, down 4.5%. Iran's production fell 24.1% to 2.2 million tons.
