World crude steel production decreased by 1.6% in January

World crude steel production decreased by 1.6% in January 2024 compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 148.1 million tons (Mt).

The World Steel Association (WorldSteel) announced the first crude steel production figures of 2024. According to the announced data, world crude steel production of 71 countries decreased by 1.6% in January 2024 compared to January 2023, reaching 148.1 million tons (Mt).

Crude steel production by region

While Africa produced 2.0 Mt in January 2024, an increase of 16.3% compared to January 2023. Asia and Oceania produced 107.6 Mt, decreasing by 3.6%. EU (27) produced 10.2 million tons, with a decrease of 1.8%. Europe, Other produced 3.9 million tons, an increase of 22.5%. The Middle East produced 4.7 million tons, an increase of 23.1%. North America produced 9.2 million tons, down 2.1%. Russia and other CIS + Ukraine produced 7.2 million tons with an increase of 4.0%. South America produced 3.4 million tons, down 6.3%.

The 10 countries that produce the most steel

While China produced 77.2 million tons in January 2024, with a decrease of 6.9% compared to the same month of the previous year, India produced 12.5 million tons with an increase of 7.3%. Japan, on the other hand, produced 7.3 million tons with an increase of 0.6%.

The United States produced 6.8 million tons, down 0.3%. It is estimated that Russia produced 6.2 million tons with an increase of 1.2%. South Korea produced 5.7 million tons, with an increase of 1.5%.

Türkiye's crude steel production increased by 24.7%

Türkiye produced 3.2 million tons, an increase of 24.7%. It is estimated that Germany produced 2.9 million tons, with a decrease of 0.9%. Iran produced 2.6 million tons, an increase of 39.3%. It is estimated that Brazil produced 2.5 million tons, with a decrease of 7.2%.
