World coal consumption rises this year

Despite ambitious global targets to wean nations from polluting fossil fuels, world coal consumption is set to hit its highest ever level this year.

World coal consumption rises this year

According to a report by the International Energy Agency, coal use is expected to increase by 1.2% in 2022 to exceed 8 billion tons in a single year for the first time. Consumption is likely to remain at this level until 2025, as declines in advanced economies are offset by demand in emerging Asian markets such as China and India.

Europe's heavy coal dependency this year is largely due to Russia's curtailment of gas supplies to the continent, forcing it to withdraw from other energy sources. We are at a time when European leaders are trying to turn to renewable energy sources to provide a clean power source going forward.

Alexandru Mustața, campaigner for Europe Beyond Coal, "underlines the urgent need to drastically increase renewable energy and energy efficiency in order to cut people's bills, secure our energy sources and keep key climate targets intact. Importantly, no European country will phase out coal by 2030. It has not reviewed its plans to eliminate it completely, and Europe is on track to get rid of coal completely by the end of the decade.” said.
