According to data from the Pilbara Port Authority (PPA), Port Hedland shipped 559.7 million tons of iron ore in 2022, compared to the previous record of 546.05 million tons set in 2021. Port Hedland exported 49.27 million tons in December, an increase of 3.6% experienced compared to November.
The Pilbara had a dry start to January, with a maximum of 25mm of rain falling over most of the area in the first two weeks. Shipments from Dampier eased in the first week of January as Rio Tinto gave a break after putting a strong end to 2022.
Shipments from Port Hedland to China reached to 482.4 million tons in 2022, up 6% from 2021. Port Hedland's exports to Japan and South Korea continued to recover after a weak October, but shipments were lower than in December 2021.
