Wanting to reduce its impact on the climate, Volvo started factory production of heavy-duty electric trucks in September. With this initiative, it took a step towards achieving its goal of reducing carbon emissions.
The steel produced by Swedish steelmaker SSAB using fossil-free hydrogen is produced using a new technology that provides a lower climate impact. In line with its strategy to reduce its impact on the climate, Volvo has introduced the production of a series of electric trucks containing this steel manufactured by SSAB. Companies like Amazon, DFDS, and Unilever through shipping company Simon Loos are known to have this fossil-free steel in some of their electric trucks.
Hydrogen-produced steel used in the electric truck's frame rails will be used in other parts of the truck as the availability of fossil-free steel increases. Volvo takes care to use recycled materials in the production of new trucks and to ensure that end-of-life trucks are recyclable.
