Vietnam’s steel imports rose 44.9% in March

According to customs data, Vietnam’s steel imports rose by 44.9% month-on-month to 1.24 million metric tons in March 2026, while scrap imports also increased by 28.5% to 556,702 metric tons during the same period.

For the first quarter as a whole, steel imports declined by 2.9% year-on-year to 3.62 million metric tons. Scrap imports, on the other hand, increased by 8% year-on-year to 1.49 million metric tons.

Looking at supply sources, imports from China—Vietnam’s largest steel supplier—fell by 29.8% year-on-year in the first quarter. In contrast, India recorded a remarkable surge, with imports increasing by more than 1,000%. Steel imports from Indonesia also rose by 59.5% to 496,070 metric tons.

On the scrap side, Japan, the main supplier, posted an 11.6% year-on-year increase in March shipments, reaching 306,656 metric tons. However, its total for the first quarter remained 5.5% below the level recorded last year.

Among other key scrap suppliers, a downward trend was observed. Australia saw a decline of 42.1%, the United States dropped by 13.8%, and Hong Kong decreased by 11.8%, all ending the first quarter with lower figures.
