U.S. weekly crude steel production rose 4.8% y-o-y

U.S. crude steel production rose by 0.8% from the previous week to 1,848,000 net metric tons in the week ending August 22, 2026.

U.S. weekly crude steel production rose 4.8% y-o-y

The previous week, on August 15, 2026, the steel production stood at 1,833,000 net metric tons. During the same period, the capacity utilization rate also rose from 79.4% to 80.0%.

U.S. weekly crude steel production increased by 4.8% compared to the same period last year. In the week ending August 22, 2025, the country produced 1,764,000 net metric tons of crude steel, while the capacity utilization rate stood at 78.2%.

As of August 22, 2026, seasonally adjusted year-to-date crude steel production reached 61,011,000 net metric tons. This figure represents a 5.6% increase compared to the 57,776,000 net metric tons produced during the same period last year.

The capacity utilization rate year-to-date stood at 79.0%, compared to 77.0% during the same period last year.

Looking at the regional production breakdown, during the week ending August 22, 136,000 net metric tons of crude steel were produced in the Northeast, 462,000 net metric tons in the Great Lakes region, 319,000 net metric tons in the Midwest, 866,000 net metric tons in the South, and 65,000 net metric tons in the West. Thus, total weekly production was recorded at 1,848,000 net metric tons.
