Canadian steel producers supported the government's decision to impose a 50% tariff on U.S. steel

Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) said it supports the Canadian government’s decision to increase the tariff on US-origin steel products to 50%.

Canadian steel producers supported the government's decision to impose a 50% tariff on U.S. steel

In a statement issued by the CSPA on August 25, 2026, the association assessed the measures taken by the Canadian government in response to US tariffs on steel products. The association said it supports making the tariffs on US steel reciprocal and welcomed the support packages announced for Canadian steelworkers.

CSPA: Measures support fair competition

The CSPA stated that the Canadian steel sector maintains its competitive structure and said they had called for the establishment of as fair competitive conditions as possible for the sector throughout the trade dispute initiated by the US administration.

The association said the Canadian government’s decision to raise the tariff on US steel products to 50% also supports this objective.

Canadian steel producers also reiterated their view regarding the ongoing negotiations with the US that it would be better to have no agreement rather than reach an agreement containing unfavorable conditions.

The CSPA said it remains confident that Canada’s negotiating team can find a lasting solution to the trade dispute between the two countries.
