The investigation was initiated based on a petition filed on April 6, 2026, by Charter Steel, Commercial Metals Company, Liberty Steel USA, Nucor Corporation, and Optimus Steel.
The Department stated that the information and evidence presented in the petition meet the relevant provisions of the Tariff Act of 1930 and has begun examining allegations that the Algerian government provides subsidies to domestic producers. The investigation period will cover January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025.
In its assessment, the Department determined that the petitioning companies provided sufficient support on behalf of the domestic industry and met the legal criteria. In this context, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that it has initiated investigations into a total of 21 separate subsidy programs within the product category.
Meanwhile, it was stated that comments regarding the product scope may be submitted by May 18, 2026, and rebuttal comments by May 28, 2026.
The U.S. Department of Commerce also noted that it will use U.S. Customs and Border Protection data to identify the companies involved in the investigation and, if necessary, will conduct detailed examinations on a limited number of producers.
It is expected that the preliminary determination will be announced within 65 days from the initiation date, unless postponed.
