US continues controversial tariffs on global steel and aluminum exports despite WTO opposition

China's Ministry of Commerce has asked the US to promptly remove tariffs on their steel and aluminum imports. This comes after a World Trade Organization panel determined that China was imposing extra duties on certain US imports.

Since March 2018, the United States has been widely criticized for its implementation of national security-based tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from various World Trade Organization (WTO) members, including China. It imposes a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum. The US government's actions have raised concerns as it is perceived to be evading its international obligations and maintaining what many view as illegal tariff measures. Despite opposition from multiple quarters, the US remains steadfast in its decision, creating an ongoing dispute within the global trade arena.
