US comments on Iran weaken prospects for nuclear deal

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said negotiations aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons may not result in a deal. Wright stated that, in such a scenario, eliminating Iran’s capability to develop nuclear weapons could be considered.

US comments on Iran weaken prospects for nuclear deal

Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week” program, Wright commented on the prospects for a nuclear deal as the conflict between the US and Iran entered its seventh month.

“There may be no nuclear deal. It may simply be a matter of eliminating their capability to do so. A deal may have to wait for the next government in Iran. We do not know that at this point,” Wright said.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is one of the main objectives of the ongoing operation. Trump has also said he wants to reach an agreement with Iran through negotiations, particularly amid rising global energy prices driven by the conflict.

Wright’s latest remarks suggest that the Trump administration is considering pursuing its objective of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons even without reaching an agreement.

Asked whether the US would continue its attacks if Iran attempted to rebuild its nuclear infrastructure, the US Energy Secretary replied, “You have to eliminate their capability to do so.”

Wright said the US is seeking to weaken Iran’s capability to develop nuclear weapons and, if such a weapon were developed, its ability to use it. He described this as an effort that has been ongoing for 47 years, saying the issue cannot be resolved easily but that the US will accomplish its objective.

Wright also said the US would continue to coordinate with its allies in the region.
