Urgent call to government from Malaysian steel industry

MISIF and MSA have called on the government to address overcapacity, unfair trade and high energy costs threatening production in the industry.

Urgent call to government from Malaysian steel industry

In a joint statement on May 5, 2025, the Malaysian Iron and Steel Industry Federation (MISIF) and the Malaysian Steel Association (MSA) called on the government to take immediate action against the structural problems threatening the industry.

The statement emphasized that the steel industry, which employs more than 283,000 people and contributed MYR 28.4 billion to the national economy in 2024, is facing a serious crisis due to rising imports, dumping practices and high energy costs. The industry needs to become sustainable and competitive in line with the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 targets.

MISIF and MSA called for urgent measures in the following five areas

  • Chronic overcapacity: Eliminating oversupply and rationalizing the sector,
  • Unfair imports: Protection of domestic production through anti-dumping measures,
  • Energy costs: Introduction of special industrial tariffs for steel producers,
  • Regulatory burdens: Deferral of new tax and contribution burdens,
  • Domestic preference: Effective implementation of the “buy Malaysian first” policy in government tenders.

MISIF and MSA stated that the report prepared by the Independent Steel Committee established by MITI has still not been implemented and asked the government to take coordinated and decisive steps without wasting any more time.

The statement noted, "The process of investigation and evaluation is over. Bold and immediate steps are now needed. Together, let us build a sustainable and resilient future for Malaysia's steel industry."
