UNESID and trade unions launch joint initiative for the future of Spain's steel industry

Spanish steelmakers' association UNESID, together with UGT FICA and CCOO Industria, held a working meeting on July 21 to establish a shared vision for the future of Spain's steel industry.

UNESID and trade unions launch joint initiative for the future of Spain's steel industry

The parties have launched a cooperation process to develop a joint roadmap aimed at strengthening the sector and preserving its long-term competitiveness.

The initiative stems from the strategic importance of the steel industry to the Spanish economy and its associated value chains, as well as the need for a coordinated response to the challenges posed by current economic, industrial and geopolitical conditions.

As part of the process, UNESID and the two trade unions will prepare a joint assessment identifying the key challenges facing the steel sector and the responsibilities it must undertake. Based on this assessment, they aim to formulate an industry strategy and develop concrete policy recommendations to address these challenges.

The joint proposal package will subsequently be submitted to the Spanish government. Its priorities will include enhancing the competitiveness of the steel industry, supporting its sustainability and strengthening its capacity to create quality employment.

The parties stated that the initiative will cover topics such as industrial competitiveness, strategic autonomy and economic security, energy transition and decarbonisation, innovation, the circular economy, education, employment and human capital. The process will be carried out through social dialogue and cooperation, with the goal of further reinforcing the steel industry's role as a cornerstone of the Spanish economy.
