UMB Steel to build 700,000 tonne rolling mill in Oțelu Roșu

Construction of a new production line at the Oțelu Roșu steel plant in Romania, where production has been suspended since 2012, has gained momentum. UMB Steel is preparing the plant to resume production with a new rolling mill with an annual capacity of 700,000 tonnes.

UMB Steel to build 700,000 tonne rolling mill in Oțelu Roșu

UMB Steel has entered a new phase in its efforts to restart the Oțelu Roșu steel plant. Recent work at the site showed that the new rolling mill and production areas have begun to take shape.

At the centre of the project is a new rolling mill with an annual capacity of approximately 700,000 tonnes. The plant is planned to produce rebar, compact coils and wire rod.

The facility will produce rebar, compact coils and wire rod and will also serve the UMB Group’s steel requirements for its infrastructure and construction activities.

New production line under construction

The new rolling mill will be integrated into the existing production complex with a CMT 700 continuous rolling system supplied by Germany’s SMS Group. The steelmaking section of the production line is planned to use an electric arc furnace (EAF), automation systems and other equipment supplied by Spain’s Sarralle.

Foundation and reinforced concrete works for the new production structures are continuing at the site, alongside the dismantling of existing facilities and the modernisation of industrial infrastructure. Work is also underway on the railway infrastructure that will be used to transport raw materials and finished products.

Initial employment of 150 people planned

As part of the restart of the Oțelu Roșu plant, approximately 100–150 people are expected to be employed initially, with the workforce planned to increase to 300–400 at a later stage.
