The government stated during parliamentary discussions that the measures were introduced to address the “serious threat” posed by global steel overcapacity to the United Kingdom’s domestic steel production capacity.
The India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), signed in July last year, has encountered delays in its implementation process due to the UK’s planned steel import restrictions, which are scheduled to take effect next month.
Earlier this week, UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade Peter Kyle held talks in New Delhi with Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal in an effort to accelerate the agreement’s implementation. Government officials emphasized that the current situation cannot be overlooked given the strategic and economic importance of the steel industry.
