According to the information compiled by SteelRadar from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data, Türkiye's flat steel imports in January 2024 increased by 6.32% compared to the same period of the previous year, rising from 684,376 tons to 727,609 tons. This figure decreased by 20.8% compared to the previous month, December 2023.
Low prices in the Far East led buyers in the market to import. While the highest imports in the month in question were from China with 247,201 tons, this figure increased by 75.3% compared to January last year. China was followed by Egypt with 99,506 tons, Japan with 89,295 tons, South Korea with 83,475 tons, and France with 37,459 tons. The country whose import rate increased the most compared to the said period was Egypt, with an increase of 281.2%.
Turkish manufacturers, who were in a deadlock due to the high trend of imports and high costs, had held meetings with official institutions on the subject. In line with these negotiations, by the decision of the President, the "Decision Concerning the Amendment to the Decision on the Imposition of Additional Customs Duty on Imports" was published and announced in the Official Gazette in January 2024, in order to support domestic production.
In line with the decision; Customs duty on hot rolled and drawn alloy bars was increased from 10% to 35%. 25% Additional Customs Duty was added only to forged alloy bars.
20% Additional Customs Duty was imposed on alloyed galvanized sheets with a width of 600 mm. Additional Customs Duty on a certain product group was increased from 6% to 15%.
While the Additional Customs Duty for 600 mm hot rolled sheets, which has an additional tax rate of 11%, was increased to 15%, an Additional Customs Duty of 17% was introduced for 600 mm cold rolled sheets.
Customs duty on stainless cold rolled sheets, which was 8%, was increased to 12%.
An additional customs duty of 20% was imposed on all coated sheet metal products for which customs duty is not applied, and a 17% additional customs duty was imposed on uncoated cold rolled sheet metal products, such as painted sheet metal, galvanized sheet metal and tinplate.
25% for forged bars and other bars, 17% for profiles, 25% for wires, 2% for other flats made of stainless steel, 5% for wires made of stainless steel, 20% for flats made of alloy steel coated with zinc, 15% for other flats made of alloyed steel, silico manganese 10% to bars made of steel, other bars of alloy steel (Forged Only), wires of other alloy steel 5%, thin and thick pipes of cast iron, 20% to hollow profiles, 5% to welded pipes, 5% to other welded pipes of stainless and alloy steel, stainless Additional Customs Duty was imposed on other pipes welded from steel, cold drawn, 12%, on other pipes made of stainless steel with a rectangular cross-section, 12%, and on other pipes welded from iron and steel, excluding stainless steel, 5%.
Even though there was a slight halt after all these developments, the Turkish steel industry was affected by the problems caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, as well as the quotas imposed by the USA and the EU; Internally, it could not offer competitive prices due to high energy costs.
