Türkiye’s crude steel production increases by 3.4% in February

Türkiye’s crude steel production increased by 3.4% in February compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 3 million tons.

Türkiye’s crude steel production increases by 3.4% in February

The Turkish Steel Producers Association (TÇÜD) announced steel production, consumption and foreign trade data for February. According to this, Türkiye’s crude steel production in the said month increased by 3.4% compared to the same month of 2025 and reached 3 million tons. In the first two months of the year, the production volume reached 6.4 million tons with an increase of 4.7%.

Final product consumption also increased by 11.3% on an annual basis in February to 3.2 million tons and increased by 4.1% in the January-February period to 6.7 million tons.

Export and import outlook in steel products

Steel product exports increased by 8.6% in quantity to 1.1 million tons and decreased by 9.2% in value to USD 714.8 million compared to the same month of 2025 in February.

In the January-February period, exports decreased by 13.5% in quantity to 2 million tons and decreased by 15.2% in value to USD 1.3 billion compared to the same period of last year.

Imports in February were calculated as 1.5 million tons with an increase of 9% in quantity and USD 1 billion with an increase of 7.2% in value compared to the same month of last year.

In the first two months of the year, imports reached 2.7 million tons with a decrease of 10.8% in quantity and USD 1.9 billion with a decrease of 11.7% in value compared to the same period of last year.

The export-to-import coverage ratio, which was 72.5% in the January-February period of last year, decreased to 69.7% in the same period of this year.

Global developments are pressure on steel trade

TÇÜD General Secretary Veysel Yayan, whose views were included in the statement, stated that the weakening trend in exports to the EU is noteworthy and that concerns have increased before the new safeguard measures expected to come into effect on July 1.

Yayan stated that exports to the EU in the first two months of the year decreased by 36% to 540.5 thousand tons and emphasized; “In the Middle East, Türkiye’s second largest export market, dramatic decreases in demand occurred due to geopolitical risks and economic slowdown, and our exports to the region decreased by 38% to 278.7 thousand tons. Although the limited increases recorded in exports to South America and CIS countries show a positive outlook in terms of market diversification, the losses in the main export markets couldnt be compensated. Within the scope of Europe’s trend to restructure supply security, the further integration of Türkiye into the ‘Made in Europe’ approach creates an opportunity for the Turkish industry. Additionally, the increasing geopolitical risks caused by the Israel-USA and Iran war negatively affect world trade and steel trade. It is evaluated that Türkiye’s increase in peace initiatives will ensure that the negative effects of the war on the Turkish economy and the steel sector are minimized.”
