Erdemir Celebrates 61 Years of Production and Strategic Contribution to Türkiye

At a time when global conflicts and uncertainties continue to shape international markets, Erdemir remains one of Türkiye’s strategic industrial enterprises, competing with leading global steel producers while ensuring critical supply security for the country.

A 61-Year Journey of Production

Since commencing production in 1965, Erdemir has continued to contribute to Türkiye’s economy and industrial development. As part of the company’s 61st anniversary celebrations, service awards were presented to employees who completed their 15th and 20th years with the company.

To attend the ceremony and review operations on site, OYAK General Manager and Chairman of the Boards of Erdemir and İsdemir, Murat Yalçıntaş, together with members of the Board of Directors, visited Erdemir’s production facilities.

“Erdemir Is an Institution That Builds the Future”

During his visit to the facilities, Murat Yalçıntaş emphasized Erdemir’s strategic role within Türkiye’s industrial landscape.

“Erdemir, one of the strongest representatives of OYAK’s responsibility to create value for our country and our members, is an institution that builds the future. The company plays a vital role in ensuring the uninterrupted operation of our industry, reducing external dependency, and enhancing our competitiveness.”

Highlighting Erdemir’s indispensable role in Türkiye’s development journey, Yalçıntaş noted that the company’s strategic importance has become even more evident amid ongoing wars and disruptions in global supply chains.

He also pointed to Erdemir’s contribution to major defense projects, including the National Aircraft Carrier (MUGEM) and the Altay Main Battle Tank, stating: “Erdemir is a source of confidence for our country.”

“Whoever Controls Steel Controls Power”

Erdemir General Manager Şaban Yazıcı underlined the company’s contribution to Türkiye’s industrialization process.

“Erdemir has paved the way for heavy industry investments, supported the development of domestic production capabilities, and contributed to the establishment of a strong engineering culture. Today, it serves as a school for the steel industry,” he said.

Emphasizing that steel is the fundamental raw material of modern industry, Yazıcı added: “From household appliances and automotive production to shipbuilding and energy investments, numerous sectors depend on steel. Therefore, whoever controls steel controls power.”

He also noted that Erdemir currently produces more than 600 steel grades and will continue developing high value-added products through its strong research and development capabilities.

Contributing to Regional Development

Yazıcı stated that Erdemir remains one of the cornerstones of economic and social life in Karadeniz Ereğli, where the company operates. Through direct and indirect employment, Erdemir contributes significantly to the development of local industries and service sectors.

He emphasized that the company will continue supporting regional development by strengthening cooperation with local stakeholders.

A Strong Position on the Global Stage

Operating under the OYAK Mining Metallurgy Group, Erdemir continues to strengthen its global competitiveness with an annual crude steel production capacity of approximately 4 million tonnes and a finished steel production capacity of 5 million tonnes.

According to the World Steel Association’s 2025 rankings, Erdemir is the world’s 52nd-largest steel producer and ranks fourth among steel producers in European Union countries. Providing direct employment to approximately 13,000 people, the company has expanded its product portfolio to 619 different flat steel grades as of 2026.

With its significant contribution to localization efforts in the defense industry, Erdemir continues to be recognized as one of Türkiye’s strategically important industrial enterprises.
