Turkey could become a base for green hydrogen production

Hasan Mandal, President of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), referred to the hydrogen base in South Marmara and emphasised that Turkey could become a base for green hydrogen production in the future.

Turkey could become a base for green hydrogen production

'Horizon Europe Programme Hydrogen Focused Information Day' meeting was hosted by Ankara Chamber of Industry (ASO). TÜBİTAK President Hasan Mandal, Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Çetin Ali Dönmez and ASO President Seyit Ardıç attended the programme. TUBITAK President Hasan Mandal stated that Turkey is one of the hydrogen valleys in Europe and said, "Turkey has the status of becoming a base for green hydrogen production in the future. Why shouldn't there be second and third hydrogen valleys in Turkey? Currently, there are only in South Marmara. There is also the potential to be in different parts of Turkey. Looking at the world in general, the target for hydrogen valleys in Europe is to reach 50-52. One of these valleys is in Turkey. This is a very good outlook for the country. The European Commission is currently showing Turkey as a centre in this sense."

Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Çetin Ali Dönmez also drew attention to the importance of the 'Horizon Europe Programme' and said, "Working with advanced ecosystems provides both our academicians and industrialists with the opportunity to develop very important muscles. We think that these collaborations should be used as a seal of excellence. A company that is entitled to receive support from any EU programme should also be cherished in the banking system. We now need to provide more selective and qualified businesses with lower interest rates and long-term financing opportunities."

"Hydrogen energy is a good alternative in carbon-intensive sectors such as iron and steel"

ASO President Seyit Ardıç stated that the approach of green hydrogen production and hydrogen valleys is of strategic importance and said, "In the past weeks, Turkey's first hydrogen valley and the initiation of work for the largest capacity green hydrogen plant is a very pleasing development. Considering the 'net zero' commitments of the European Union for 2050 and our country for 2053, we need to realise green transformation rapidly. Hydrogen energy can be a good alternative in carbon-intensive sectors such as chemistry and iron and steel."
