Thyssenkrupp will start construction of DRI unit in Duisburg earlier

Thyssenkrupp has reportedly received approval from the German government for its first directly reduced iron facility to be located at its Duisburg site. Construction of the DRI (Directly reduced iron) facility is expected to start earlier than planned.

The tkH2Steel project will be financed by approximately EUR 2 billion from the German government and Thyssenkrupp will provide close to EUR 1 billion. The DRI facility is planned to start production in 2026 and will have an annual production capacity of 2.5mt of direct reduced iron.

It was stated that the European Commission approved an additional payment of 550 million Euros to Thyssenkrupp in July 2030 to expedite the transition to renewable hydrogen and for the construction of a direct reduction facility.
