The USA to start negotiations with Japan on steel and aluminum tariffs

The USA administration announced that it will start negotiations with Japan on tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

The USA to start negotiations with Japan on steel and aluminum tariffs

The decision of the USA to start negotiations with Japan came after the settlement reached with the European Union (EU) in the customs duty dispute on steel and aluminum products, which has been going on since 2018.

The talks aim to address excess capacity in the global steel and aluminum sectors, restore market conditions and protect critical industries, the US Trade Representative (USTR) said in a statement.

Stressing that disruptions due to overcapacity pose a serious threat to the US steel and aluminum industry and workers in these industries, the talks are aimed at promoting high standards, addressing common concerns, including climate change, and thwarting countries such as China that support non-market policies and practices that distort trade. opportunity was noted.

In 2018, the United States decided to impose tariffs of 25 percent and 10 percent, respectively, on imported steel and aluminum on the grounds of "national security".
