The steel plant of ArcelorMittal Dunkirk in France, a subsidiary of one of Europe's leading steel producers, will temporarily operate with only one of its three blast furnaces (BF) following a fire that occurred in its most powerful furnace, BF 4. While there was no damage caused by the fire, an investigation into the incident is ongoing. The plant will continue to operate with only one furnace during this process. This incident is likely to contribute to the shortage of hot-rolled steel in the European Union market, potentially affecting prices and order fulfillment times.
Additionally, ArcelorMittal has stopped furnace A at its plant in Gijón, northern Spain due to instability, which caused a fire and heavy smoke. Personnel were evacuated, and the furnace will be closed for at least two months, according to reports.
In 2022, ArcelorMittal reduced its steel production by 14.6% compared to the same period last year, and its net profit for the year decreased by 37.8% compared to 2021.
