Steel production halted at Libyan steel mill due to ongoing power crisis

Libyan National Unity Government (GNU) Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh has instructed state-owned Libyan Iron and Steel Company (LISCO) to halt production due to the electricity shortage in the country.

Steel production halted at Libyan steel mill due to ongoing power crisis

Dbeibeh instructed LISCO, which operates in the city of Misrata, to halt production due to the electricity shortage. The Prime Minister also ordered the company’s power plant to be connected to the national electricity grid.

A source from the company told SteelRadar last week that iron production at the company had been halted for approximately one month. It was stated that production had been restricted in line with the government’s instructions to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours over the summer period.

During this period, only the HBI production unit continued to operate, while production at the other facilities would resume if the government issued a new request. No clear date was given for when production at the other facilities would restart.

Libya is facing a severe electricity crisis as temperatures continue to rise. Power outages in the country’s major cities have reportedly reached up to 10 hours per day.

Prolonged power outages have also sparked protests across the country, while the ongoing energy shortage has begun to affect industrial production.
